Money Tree or Pachira aquatica
Family - Bombacaceae
Money tree became a popular houseplant due to beleive that it brings money, wealth and luck to the house. Sometimes it is also called Water Chestnut - and it really produces nuts but not when grown inside.
Born in Central America it likes warm conditions.
Money tree is a good candidate for not very bright room in your house as it will grow in a low-light spot although after long time you might encounter that leaves are becoming smaller.
Pachira aquatica likes light well-draining soil and doesn't like overwatering - don't let the water to collect in the saucer. Let the soil to be on the dry side before watering but make sure that the rootball doesn't dry out completely.
If you live in the colder climat and put Money tree outside for warm period - don't forget to get it back inside before frost comes - it might loose all leaves if gets too cold.
Actually I think that loosing and browning leaves are their ways of communicating with you, to let you know that something is not right and it includes - overwatering, underwatering, cold drafts, too small pot etc.- go and figure for yourself. |
