Spathiphyllum
Family - Araceae
Spathiphyllum or Spathe Flower or Peace Lily comes from tropics and includes about 40 different species. We commonly grow indoors the one called Spathiphyllum floribundum.
These plants are very undemanding, grow in any lighting conditions and readily flower in summer period.
Flower comes from long stalk and consists of yelowish-creamy spadix surrounded
by white bract. Flowering begins with white bract which after becomes greenish.
Spathiphyllum likes to be watered moderately and will appreciate misting on warm
dry days. If left unwatered for long - spathiphyllum will droop and look
lifeless, but don't throw it away yet, give it a good drink and it will stand
fresh and happy again.
Propagation is usually done by division, because spathes often like to produce
lots of babies around the main growth.
For potting medium - the tropical soil mix will do.
Do not put spathiphyllum under direct sunlight - the leaves will be burned in no
time.
The liquid from broken stalks might trigger skin irritation in some people. |
